There's a story in the Christian Science Monitor today about the newly elected Muslim congressman who plans to carry a copy of the Quran for his swearing in. Oh, yeah, and the resulting predictable brouhaha, precipitated by the usual Bible-thumping nut. (BTN) I mean, if it weren't for BTNs, what would we do for entertainment? This particular BTN has obviously stopped even pretending to support the Constitutional separation of church and state. But the Constitution aside, I have one logical question about his assertion that everyone should swear on the Bible. If Ellison doesn't BELIEVE in the Bible, what would it mean? The whole point of using a Bible is that it's something you believe in enough that you wouldn't dare lie while your hand is on it. So.... wouldn't that be like asking him to put his hand on, say, The Batman Handbook? What would it prove, except that we have ALL abandoned all pretense of believing in separation of church and state?
