And a fine time was had by all
Jun. 19th, 2005 10:46 pmMidsummer's Twilight Tourney was a rousing success, as far as I could tell. Great site, wonderful weather, good food, and more good food. The only stressful thing about the overall event for me was that I was head server, and I have to say that I should never again agree to fill any position that requires organizing anything. At all. Ever. That said, everyone was served in a timely fashion with little ado. It's just that there was stuff I was supposed to tell the servers and forgot-- Clare covered that one. Livia also covered for me a lot; she worked as a wait person for 3 1/2 years so she had it down cold. She and I served High Table, and I even kept forgetting the proper sequence of service. How embarrassing.
Of course, the highlight of the day for me was the apprenticing ceremony. It was brief.... very brief, in fact, and even that taxed my ceremony-creating skills. Livia seemed happy, though, and that's the main point of the exercise. I came down with a case of fumble-tongue, but at least it didn't totally deteriorate to hoof-in-mouth disease. We were trying to put last minute details in order when I was made aware that everyone on site (to my eye, at least) including Prince Janos, was standing in a semi-circle, waiting for us to begin. Yikes. Whatever thoughts I had in my head fled the scene at that point. The plan was totally missing in action. We made it through alright anyhow. Beatrice Villani had offered to prepare food for the reception, and she made tons of food. I added Banbury Tarts and my (now even more infamous) Rum Balls. Amazingly enough, almost everything went away, even after the huge, and delicious, feast.
There were two courts, a play, and much music and poetry to be had during the day, and there was enough banter between Olivier (the poet formerly known as Olsk), Dunstan, and Justus to convince me to stay for the Bardic. I haven't always attended bardics, but the firepower available there was too much to ignore. As it happens, there were several other storytellers and singers there that I'd never heard perform before, and I enjoyed them all. I have no idea where they all came from! (Now that I think of it, there were lots of people at the event I didn't know.) Highly entertaining. I can see I'm going to have to brush up whatever skills I possess-- last night wasn't a "pick pass, or play" night but that's frequent enough that I won't want to just sit like a bump on a log.
I've apparently fallen prey again to the shoulda-had-a-tape-recorder syndrome. There were so many cool things I wanted to mention but, as happened yesterday, the mind has gone all spacious again. Sigh. Oh, well. It was all good, and now I have an apprentice of my very own. Whee! Funny, it always sounded kind of sinister when I heard someone else say gleefully "MY apprentice! Mine!" but it doesn't feel that way from this end, and I don't mean it that way. Interesting. Everything is context.
That's it for me. Off to bed with a book-- it's good enough I'm almost surprised I've torn myself away from it as much as I have today.
