Whee!

I had a mildly productive day yesterday, in a totally non-practical sort of way. I've been trying to put together some mix CDs for months now, and yesterday I got two done that I'm happy with, and one that needed some tweaking this morning. The first one is in honor of my new apprentice; it was her suggestion to make one about "girl stuff." Heh. (Back in the day, I suppose I would have gotten steamed about using the word "girls" but I've regained my sense of humor.) I started that one off with the romping "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", added "Jenny Says" and some stuff by The Donnas and Garbage at her request (yay, new music for me!) Livia suggested "Bitch," which I love and she called a "female affirmation song." Yeah, what she said. To add my own inimitable touch, I threw in "Dancing Queen" and "Tits on the Radio," and to tailor it for us, "Short People" and "School Days" ending with "Bookends."

Last night after I got home from sushi with [livejournal.com profile] harleenquinzell (where we ran into [livejournal.com profile] intrepida and [livejournal.com profile] hanareru) I decided to play with a couple of other mixes. I've been wanting some aurally non-stressful music to listen to in the car. The first one went well. The second one-- well, I was happy with it when I went to bed last night. This morning, not so much. I wasn't happy with several of the transitions, and it doesn't have a theme, which I usually work with. A lot of ballads, I guess they are, and several instsrumentals. I had a really hard time getting the tempo right-- it kept trying to slip into an elegiac tone.

(I had to separate "Blue," "Hymn," "Unchained Melody," and "The End of the World" to keep them from taking over. Damned unruly kids. "The End of the World" has got to be one of the cheesiest songs on earth-- Why does my heart keep on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when you said goodbye. It is, however, the very first song I ever slow-danced to-- in Barbourville, Kentucky, with a kid who was nicknamed Deputy Dawg because his dad was sheriff.)

Some of my very favorite songs to sing along with are very sad, all about lost love and such. Even when they are totally inapplicable to my current situation, they still make me sing along with fervor. Still, they needed to be mixed with things like "One Man's Ceiling is Another Man's Floor," "Good Vibrations," "Free Man in Paris," "The Friends Song" (from Princess Bride) and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" to keep me from wanting to drive into the nearest bridge abutment. Maybe I should just call that one the "cheesy-corny mix." No, wait! Corn Pudding! That's it. Corny, a little cheese, warm and comforting. Heh. I like it better already.

One thing annoys me about making mix CDs-- even though I have set i-Tunes to even out the relative volume level of the songs on both play and record, the volume still varies noticeably. Very irritating.

Now I have studying to do. And Pennsic sewing. No rest for the wicked. Or is that weary?
