Weekend at Danny's
Aug. 22nd, 2005 09:21 amI posted from my brother’s house in Akron during the intra-Pennsic weekend. When I closed the post, it was late afternoon and Daniel had just gotten a call from his brother, asking where they were. They had a mix-up as to which day they were supposed to celebrate D’s sister-in-law’s B’day, and his brother got really pissy about it. Well, just forget it, then, he said. Uhhh…. But it isn’t YOUR birthday we’re talking about, shouldn’t you be nice to the birthday girl instead of scoring some kind of point by telling Daniel to keep his cake? And lord, what a cake. The recipe says to bake a chocolate cake in a 9x13 pan and let it cool. Then poke 20 holes in it with the end of a wooden spoon, pour condensed milk into each of those holes and put it in the refrigerator till that’s absorbed. Then pour caramel into the same holes and let that soak in. Cover the whole thing with Cool Whip (she specified LITE Cool Whip, with an exclamation point) and chocolate chips. Good lord! I think about one bite of that would be about all I could eat. Anyway, they were going to take it over the next day and offer it up. No idea how it was received.
After all that joy, we went to dinner at Macaroni Grill. It seems that Danny and Daniel had been to dinner there once before. The dinner was excellent and the service good. When they wanted to leave, though, they couldn’t get their check, and then they couldn‘t get anyone to take payment. They waited a half hour, asking other wait staff and even going to the front to ask for help. One of the bartenders suggested that when they got home they should go online and write a note to management. The result was that they got a letter giving them a free dinner. Daniel called the restaurant to let them know we were coming. I would have just made a reservation (unless the letter specifically said to say that it was a freebie ahead of time) but Daniel let them know it was a complimentary meal and made sure the manager knew. Lordamercy, did they fawn over us. Daniel loved it. He wasn’t pissy about it but he sure loved the attention. The food was excellent and the manager told us he was giving us the best waiter he had. We had drinks (I had a Leaning Bellini; how could I pass that up? Lucia Bellini, you know. Heh,) and the boys had Cosmopolitans. Daniel ordered a calamari appetizer, which was very tender, unlike any other calamari I’ve ever had. For dinner I got the lobster ravioli with shrimps in garlic sauce. Exquisite. It was so good I had to eat every bite, which I never do. At the end of the meal, the manager came by to say that the entire tab was on the house, and Daniel should keep his letter to use another time. The D’s had expected two meals to be covered, but he included all three meals and the drinks and appetizers, too. We were all so stuffed and happy we could hardly crawl to the car.
Sunday I went back to Pennsic. It was rather disorienting to have the long medieval experience interrupted by the modern weekend. But oh, the food. Sigh.
