It was another rainy day on Sunday. I had one of those nagging half-a-headaches that wouldn’t go away, even with the Imitrex that usually handles that stuff. So, I thought, why not take a long hot soak in the tub? Just relax and read. I filled the tub with hot water and added scented bath salts, slipped into the water and slid down to rest my head on the towel at the end of the tub. Ahhhh. I grabbed my book and started reading.

Carmen and Miranda were, by this time, pretty curious about the whole procedure. What is this funny smelling stuff, anyway? They stood on their back paws, hooked their front paws over the edge of the tub, and stared, hypnotized, at the water. Aw, aren’t they cute? Miranda lost interest fairly quickly and wandered out of the room. Carmen, however, was fascinated. She leapt onto the edge of the tub and paced back and forth, staring intently at the water. She finally settled at the far end, where she was behind the shower curtain, and sat down on the edge of the tub. I was only reading with about half my attention; the other half was making sure she stayed balanced because, you know, my watchfulness can keep a cat from falling into the water by accident.

Miranda wandered back into the room and sat down on the floor directly behind Carmen. Bap. Bap. Miranda swatted through the shower curtain. Carmen teetered but continued to stare at the water. I twitched. Miranda batted again. Carmen teetered some more. I moved my legs as far as possible to the other side of the tub and tried to distract Miranda without alarming Carmen. Ha. Miranda was suffering no distraction.

BAP! A mighty whack pushed Carmen juuuuuust that little too far. (Even watchfulness can only do so much.)

AAAAaaahhh! I jerked the book as far as I could get it away from the water while jumping to keep my tender flesh away from the now-scrabbling Carmen. My yell startled Miranda, who shot out of the room. Carmen, meanwhile, managed to not touch the water with any part of her body besides her feet while turning 180 degrees in mid-air and launching herself over the edge of the tub and out of the room. I was laughing in half-hysterical relief, because lo! Through the miracle of cat levitation, I escaped without a scratch, the (library) book was undamaged, and only dry cats were racing through the house.

Ii took me a while to get back to the proper relaxed frame of mind after that, I can tell you, and everybody else in the house took some time to regain their dignity. And we all spent the rest of the day feeling relieved.

when i take a bath my cat sits and stares at me like she can't believe i'd voluntarily sit in a large quantity of water. she's not fallen in yet, though.

That is great!

James and Aretha get curious the few times we take baths, but are too big to fit on the bath tub edge and just sit on the bathroom floor and watch us. Haven't taken a bath since Grendel moved in, and can only imagine the explosion of blood that would be the result of him falling in the tub with us.

That cat levitation trick is pretty cool. Ignatius has developed a fascination with water draining out of the tub.

Cat Magic ...

You just have to love that moment of sheer terror combined with the utter helplessness of laughing 'til you're sick at the silly contortions cats will wind themselves into to avoid getting wet. Add to that the fear of bleeding to death from cat scratches while you laugh uncontrollably in a bathtub full of hot water. Makes for a pretty exciting evening all around, if you think about it.
