Maybe I got a lot done today, I don't know. Sounds funny, I guess. I didn't get as much done as I hoped, but I think my goals were probably unrealistic.

I woke up at 6:30--what fun. Well, that was okay because I planned to do laundry anyway, and the best time to get there is at 7. So I popped out of bed and got started. It was actually more like 7:30 by the time I finished everything I needed to do and got laundry started. I took my reading for my paper. Laptop, too, just in case, but there was no outlet to plug into, and there was nothing so important it couldn't wait. So I read, and underlined and made notes, and repeated countless times. Folded laundry, came home, put it away. Read, underlined, made notes, repeated. Washed dishes. Read, underlined, made notes repeated. Damn, I'm sick of this topic. Washed more dishes. Petted the cat. Read, underlined.... Sigh. I really thought I might start writing today. Silly me. I think it all needs to settle in my brain for awhile. I have read every article that I have collected at least once. (Twenty articles for a paper that is supposed to be 12-15 pages, double spaced. Think that's enough?)

The one thing that I really want that has eluded my grasp is the "Mission Statement of Public Libraries." Sounds so simple, doesn't it? I even enlisted Amy's help, after using Dialog and every trick I could think of with Google. She's really good; I hoped she could think of a trick or two I hadn't. She couldn't find it, either. We both found mission statements by the ALA and its subsidiaries about how they support public libraries, and mission statments from half the states in the union. When we put in ALA we got stuff from Australia, too, which at least provided a brief flash of amusement after the flare of hope.

I know the Public Library ASsociation realeased it in 1977-- hell , for all I know they have released a new version that's called something else, by now. Maybe two versions, that was so long ago. Whatever they call it, I figure there has to be something out there. My paper is supposed to be about the historic mission of public libraries, but it's also kind of evolving and expanding, as paper-topics are wont to do. by the time I actually get writing on this and see how it goes, I might have enough for two papers and have to narrow it back down a little. Heh.

All I know right now is, I'm fried and I can't look at the damn topic anymore.

Oh, I did look up a quote today, and I actually even remembered it right. I have collected several articles that talk about the Patriot Act, and what it reminded me of was "Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels." I didn't know who said it, but found out that it was Samuel Johnson. Wish I could figure out how to incorporate that into the paper....
