damn, I'm tired
Apr. 22nd, 2006 07:53 pmI went to the library today to work on my Cataloging final exam. That's the one the teacher said she expects us to take 5-7 hours to finish. As if. I worked on it for 6 hours today and will be back tomorrow. If I can force myself, I should type it up tonight, to see where the unknowns are, if nothing else. Not sure I'll be able to do it, though. And since nobody on earth still even owns a typewriter, why do we still say we're typing something? Or am I the only one who says that? What do you do if you don't say "type?" "Key it in" just sounds silly to me. Sigh.
The good news is that by the end of the day I was starting to feel familiar with the books, though I gotta say, the some of those cataloging rules are just too weird. While I was sitting there looking up all the random titles she gave us, I kept thinking about the people in
library_mofo who say patrons ask them "You mean you have to have a degree to use the Dewey Decimal system?" I kept thinking, "Okay, what number would YOU assign to a book on unemployment resulting from technological change? Or education services in adult women's prisons?" Like anybody is born knowing this shit. And if anybody WAS born knowing the correct Library of Congress subject heading for "Care of clothing in the 19th Century," feel free to give me a buzz.
Okay, I am hereby abandoning all pretense of doing anything related to that exam tonight. Tomorrow morning will do. I remember Aunt Susan saying "Sufficient unto the day...." with a significan little pause and a laugh. Or maybe I just imagined that, since I just tried to look up the quote and came up a complete blank. I thought it ended "is the evil thereof" which is pretty convoluted, but then, lots of good quotes are.
I think I'm going to take my exhausted self to bed and finish re-reading the latest Janet Evanovich. Heh. That's about all my brain is up to right now.
Ta.
