Wow. I'm learning more about cataloging from this damn test.... well, obviously, it's all building on what she taught earlier, and it's all finally coming together. Wish this had happened sooner. In fact, I’ve gotten interested in some of this stuff, in a purely academic way. I still don’t think I’m likely to rush out and beg to catalog professionally, though.

This morning I misplaced one of the printouts that I had analyzed for the first section of the test. I need to include it with the test, so I thought, “I’ll just print out another copy.” Ha. As if. I knew there were lots and lots of different records in the online catalog of the Library of Congress (?) but still. I even put in the ISBN, which I thought was unique, and got a different record than the one I started with. Then I started analyzing all the differences. The devil is in the details, you know. I’ve decided I’m going to put in copies of all the different records I printed out—and there are literally dozens that I didn’t print out, because they are different languages, or video, or some other variant, and don’t have anything to do with the question at hand—and make notes on the differences, and which one seems more accurate, based on my knowledge of what the book is really about. Is this obsession, or just interest and figuring out what this stuff really means?

I’m up to about 16 hours so far. I can’t decide if that means I’m being particularly cautious or I’m just a dunce for taking so long on a test she estimated at 5-7 hours. I know which way it makes me feel but I’m trying to convince myself it’s really caution. In reality, as always, the truth is probably somewhere in between. The best students might whip through it in 5-7 hours, but (a) I’m definitely not the best student in this class and (b) I’m being downright paranoid. It’s like I tell C&I students—you’re not going to get good by mistake; you’ll never accidentally be better than you try to be. You have to do your damn best and you’re still going to make mistakes even when you think you’ve got it right.

I’m definitely feeling better about the rest of the test. I did some research last night after I got home (after 5 more hours in the library) and I think I got the last detail on at least one of the answers that was bugging me. There’s still one more that I need to work on, though…. damn shoes and their prices. I might take that one from two directions and include them both and explain why. After all, she has said that there can be more than one correct answer… heh.

So, I think I’m going to go back to the library AGAIN, to document this stuff. Livia—is your offer good for tonight?
