I went back for a second search outside, looking for places I hadn't explored the first time. This time I saw a half-door open in the basement of the building; pushed it open, and made the clicking noise that brings them running quicker than anything besides a can opener, and voila! Carmen came running out of the darkness, purring and chirping at me. The other two aren't quite as thrilled as I am; she smells so strongly even *I* can smell it, and they are both hissing at her. I took a wet wipe to the parts that looked damp, and now she's washing out of pure indignation. We'll see if that helps.

Of course, it's too late now for me to make the Preservation lecture I hoped to attend this AM. And I guess I should really hit the presentation that's due tomorrow. Sigh.

Wonderful!

My cat when I was just a wee hellion got out of the house and chased into the crawlspace under a neighbor's house by a dog. She was in there three days before we found her. Between that and the cancer, she was making the most of her nine lives.

Have we told you about the time James vanished while we were moving in to the new place?

I'm so glad you found her. Ripper used to dash out at every opportunity. We really had to watch him. Fortunately, none of the current four seem to be as intent on going outside as he was.

The aptly named Grendel runs outside whenever we open the door, goes ten feet, and rolls around on the sidewalk. It is the only time you can pet his belly.

If I thought that she'd never go any farther than what she did last night I wouldn't be quite as paranoid, but she's just never had to protect herself. If she is outside for any length of time.... Makes me nervous.

Nic used to make a run for it periodically, but this is new behaviour for her. Gonna have to be more careful now, like putting her in another room with the door closed if I know I'll be carrying stuff in and out. Last night though.... I never even saw her.
