So. I had a physical a few weeks back. The checkout clerk isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer (more like one of those plastic disposables, in fact) but otherwise, I love the office. Anyway, she forgot to make me an appointment for the lab work, thus dragging all this stuff out for weeks. I still haven't heard anything from the bone density test. The blood work, however, I did hear about. Sigh. BIG sigh. The Bad Cholesterol (I'm not going to bother you with those silly letters; Good or Bad is what's important unless you're studying for a nursing exam or something) is high. It didn't sound to me like it's OH MY GOD! high, or even Oh, My God! high, but I still am supposed to be tested again in 3 months to see if I can get it down some.

Unfortunately, since the lab work came after the office visit, I didn't get any glossy pamphlets about "So you have High Cholesterol" and am digging the info out myself. Since I am studying to be in a profession whose job is to seek out information, however, I figure I should be able to handle this. And since I don't want to embarrass myself by checking out "The Lower Your Cholesterol Cookbook" at the library, I've been looking online this morning. I know there's tons of good information out there. One of the sites I found is by Prevention magazine, which I take to be reasonably respectable. However, the first thing I saw when I went to their web page on cholesterol and diet is a big ad showing what looks like yogurt with fruit in it, and the tagline says in huge letters, A FRUIT FILLED RECIPE THAT WON'T AGGRAVATE YOUR INCONTINENCE. Wait.... Incontinence? I thought I only had slightly high cholesterol, but now I'm incontinent, too? Damn. This is getting serious. Maybe I'll check out a cookbook after all.

Actually, that's probably a damn good idea. My ideas about the subject have, at this point, been formed by my parent's diet immediately after their heart surgeries, and that was downright abstemious. I mean, I like broccoli, sometimes, and I eat chicken white meat more than all other meats put together, probably, but still. A diet of mostly veggies, going into winter, is not my idea of a good time. I must find a way to make this palatable, or it simply won't happen, and I'll be just another aging American enriching the drug companies by buying another drug.

Another source I haven't checked yet is government info. They have tons of stuff. I've gotten so cynical about "information" from the feds lately.... the current admin feels so free to edit anything that they don't like that I wonder how much I can trust anything they put out? I guess the best thing in their favor right now is that there's not a huge lobby like the oil companies putting pressure on them to change dietary infrormation. And really, all dietary information is going to be based on government guidelines anyway, so why not go directly to the source instead or through intermediaries?

I also wonder-- I read that the recommended daily allowance of cholesterol is less than 200mg/day. Presumably I need to consume as little as possible to lower the readings, but I'd like to have a target that's more reasonable than NONE!! YOU MUST NOT HAVE ANY! I am going to live with this for the rest of my life. (Obviously, with eggs- one of my favorite comfort foods- having 213mg EACH, they won't be in my daily diet.) This, my friends, is going to take some figuring.

All this rumination is actually at an appropriate time. I'm going to the grocery store in a bit, and then to the farmer's market. Lots of apples, and I'll be damned if I burn them all up this time.

Sounds like you're not cynical enough about the food lobbyists...
:-)

Sorry I can't offer more helpful stuff about the diet stuff. Nikulai had good things to say about one of the "Light cooking" magazines, once, but I dont' remember which one...
